Easy Tuna Sushi Balls for Kids' Lunchboxes
Looking for a lunchbox idea that feels a little bit special without taking forever to make?
These Tuna Sushi Balls have become a favourite in our house. They're easy to prepare, simple to pack, and perfect for little sushi lovers.
This recipe was inspired by @nourish_naturally over on Instagram. We've made a few small changes to suit our family, including using 230g sushi rice, skipping the avocado, and adding a dash of sesame oil.
Ingredients
- 230g sushi rice
- 95g tuna
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar
- Dash of sesame oil
- 1 sheet nori, finely chopped
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
Method
- Cook the sushi rice according to packet instructions and allow it to cool slightly.
- Add the soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, sesame oil, chopped nori and sesame seeds. Mix well.
- Place the tuna into the bowl and mix together with the other ingredients.
- Shape into balls using your hands.
- Refrigerate until ready to serve or pack into lunchboxes.

Bento Buzz Tips 💛
- Great for little sushi lovers who enjoy familiar flavours.
- Make ahead the night before to save time during the morning rush.
- Pop them into an insulated lunchbox compartment or food jar to help keep them fresh.
Make Sushi Lunches Even More Fun
Tuna Sushi Balls are already the perfect little bite-sized lunch, so you don’t need to do much to make the rest of the lunchbox feel fun. Add cucumber, edamame, fruit or cheese alongside them and use our Food Picks & Rings to make those smaller sides easy for little hands to grab. If your sushi lover likes an extra splash of soy sauce or Kewpie mayo, our Sauce & Dip Containers are handy for packing it separately rather than adding it before school.
For kids who prefer not to eat everything with their hands, have a look through our Kids Cutlery too. Or, if sushi regularly makes an appearance in your house, our Bento Lunch Boxes give you plenty of options for packing sushi alongside all their favourite little sides.

Born from a passion to create deliciously bright and inviting meals for my daughter 15 years ago. As she grew, my lunch box and bento decoration stash did too... and so did my need to enable everyone else around me and just like that, The Bento Buzz began!

Forever thankful for our community, Peta and The Bento Buzz team X

Hi, would this work without the sauces? My daughter is coeliac but also is autistic so prefers familiar flavours and loves plain tuna and rice!
